What does it mean to successfully navigate the path from childhood to adulthood? As parents, how do we successfully guide our children through adolescence to adulthood? What is it that made previous generations successful and resilient? In this book, Senator Ben Sasse makes the argument that the current generation that is coming of age is a passionate generation but in many ways lack an understanding of meaningful adulthood and how to become a successful adult. We have lost the rights-of-passage that have characterized previous generations and exchanged them for an often aimless period of prolonged adolescence. We have lost a shared sense of who we are as a citizens of an American culture. Senator Sasse describes the origins of this breakdown and his path to regaining a shared understanding of adulthood. He focuses not on policy, but on the sociologic underpinnings of culture that precede politics. This was an amazing read as I both consider how to raise my boys as well as the nature of a life well lived.
