Book #17: The Road to Character, David Brooks
We live with a tension between 2 personalities: Adam 1 and Adam 2. One compels us to strive for success in our lives, jobs and relationships. The other strives for moral excellence. And often these two live in tension with each other. In this book, David Brooks uses character sketches to highlight important virtues. And in the journey of seeking virtue often we find a balance between Adam 1 and Adam 2. My major critique is this. This book should not be read as an exposition on theology as it takes a strong works righteousness perspective. That being said, it is an interesting discussion of virtue and we as a society would be wise to seek to foster a greater sense of virtue.
