Book #6: The Heroin Diaries, Nikki Sixx
In the past several years, our nation has been made aware of growing crisis known as the opiate epidemic. Due to increasing potency of IV drugs due to additive such as fentanyl and carfentanyl, many are dying with a needle in their veins and spoon in hand. Whether fatal or near-fatal, individuals who overdose on opiates are showing up in local Emergency Departments in record number. As someone who has only ever taken Vicodin after my wisdom teeth were pulled, I have no understanding of the life opiate addicted patients lead and why they keep returning to that which will one day kill them. In this book, Nikki Sixx (rockstar formerly from the Motley Crue and now SixxAM) shares the diary he kept in 1986 when he was strung out on heroin and cocaine. This is a fascinating, first-hand account of the life and mind of a heroin abuser. As an Emergency Physician who has almost daily contact with patients who use and abuse drugs, it was an extremely helpful and insightful read.
