One Damn Thing After Another

One Damn Thing After Another William P. Barr

There have been 2 individuals in U.S. History that have served as Attorney General of the United States. The first was John Crittenden who serve the William Henry Harrison, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore administrations in the mid 1800’s. The second was William Barr who served the George H.W. Bush administration in the 1990’s and the end of the Donald Trump administration.

This book is A.G. Barr’s memoir of his life in the law and time in the office of Attorney General. He discusses his childhood, education and chronicles his experiences in public office. Throughout the book, he makes an argument for limited government conservativism and shows how he constantly sought to uphold the rule of law within this context.

This not only a great read for anyone who is interested in the intersection of history and contemporary politics. But it is also a great primer on various aspects of constitutional law as illustrated through contemporary cases and events.

This book was described by political commentator, author and radio host, Hugh Hewitt as one of the best political memoirs that he has read. Though not as prolific in my consumption of this genre, having read multiple memoirs of public figures, I would have to agree. I particularly appreciated the combination of history and con-law education that is easily understood and approachable.

Whatever your personal political persuasion, and whatever you think about the Bush and Trump administrations, I highly recommend this book. It will certainly broaden your perspectives and provide a framework to understand the workings of our government and the law.
