Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:7
He was a former Roman Legionary, now a mercenary in a land full of zealots and insurgents opposing Roman rule. Commissioned by his former protégé, now Roman commander, he was charged to intercept the delivery of a letter believed harmful to the Roman Empire. Through hardship, tactical maneuvers and chance encounters and the Man at Arms faces his past and wrestles to discover his values as he seeks to find the desired letter from the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth.
This is the third book that I have read by Steven Pressfield – each have been amazing. He writes historical fiction about the Greco-Roman era in a way that immerses the reader in the historical context. This particular book places the reader in Roman occupied Judea and provides a very insightful understanding of some of the culture and political forces that were present during the biblical times. For me, I tend to assume that the letters of Paul were written in the social-political-religious context of religious tolerance that I enjoy. While admittedly fiction, this book powerfully illustrated the political and social forces seeking to suppress the spread of Christianity in the early church period.
