Do Hard Things

In our family, we've adopted some different phrases that we say from time-to-time to remind us of who we are, our ethos and what we're trying to do. These are phrases like “Discipline equals freedom.”  “Hard work pays off.”  Another phrase that we've adopted is “We do hard things!”  We say it from time-to-time to ourselves and to our kids to remind ourselves of how we want to live our lives.

The question then becomes, well, why do we do hard things? I think there are a few reasons for that.

First, life isn't easy. Life is actually hard. There may be easy days. There may be things that are easier.  But ultimately, it is not too hard to see that day-to-day life is not easy.  And the ER is certainly a canvas that shows how life is not easy.

If we expect that life somehow is easy and only do easy things then we are really going to struggle when things get hard. But if we prime ourselves to do hard things… by doing hard things, then it makes those actual hard things maybe just a little bit easier.

Second, rarely in life is the easy way out, the best way out or the right way or the path of excellence.  So if we set this expectation that we do hard things, that when we face difficulties, when we face challenges, we don't look for the easy road out.   If we establish a habit of taking the hard road, that is going to prime us for making better decisions when we actually face real hard things.

This is why I believe that fitness is so important.  It is a crucible where I can create scenarios so that I can train myself in discipline and resilience.  So, whether you're in the gym hitting the weights or whether you're going throughout your day-to-day business, do hard things!
